In Barry Sears previous books, The Zone and Mastering
the Zone, he outlines a plan for using diet to optimize
your body's hormonal balance. Because hormones are the
chemical messengers that direct most of your body's
activities, Sears states that by regulating hormone levels
through diet, one can speed up lose of body fat, prevent
disease, increase energy levels, and increase well being.
In this most recent book, Barry Sears provides you with an
extensive list of Zone food block values for common foods.
This allows you to more easily prepare or select a meal
that meet the Zone requirements. (40% protein, 40%
carbohydrates, 30% fat). Using this book, almost any type
of food, including take out and fast food items can be
converted to Zone food block units. While this may be
true, the calculations for foods not listed in the book
may be a bit confusing for the nonmathematically inclined.
Nevertheless, I found it to be a useful reference guide
for optimizing diet and staying within the Zone parameters.
I found the fast food guide to be particularly useful, as
it helped me to stay on course with the plan, even when
eating in the "less than healthy" fast food establishment.
While this book may be a bit more difficult to deciper than
a calorie or fat gram counter, once the concepts and
calculations are understood, this book can be an important
addition to your balanced diet plan.
