Before Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies and all the other
swing bands brought back the outdated genre of swing, there was the
Squirrel Nut Zippers. The Squirrel Nut Zippers hail from Chapel Hill,
North Carolina and their heritage is evident throughout their first holiday
album, Christmas Caravan. The Zippers take swing music and spike it with
a touch of bluegrass and just a little of their southern charm. That
southern charm couldn't show through anymore than on their song "Carolina
Christmas." The other holiday songs are remarkably amusing to listen to.
"Indian Giver" is a spoof on the frequently used term about friends who
take back Christmas presents after only a few hours. And one song is
even taken from the popular Christmas story, Gift of the Magi. If a new
holiday album is on your list this Christmas, pick up Squirrel Nut Zippers'
Christmas Caravan for a refreshing new look at the familiar holiday.
