Review by Ken 3 stars out of 4
Soundtrack to the Kevin Williamson-scripted sci-fi thriller is typically
laden with big modern rock stars. But I guess it goes without saying that a
Generation-X themed flick like this would not have a Willie Nelson-type feel
to it. The highlight here is definitely the cover of Pink Floyd's 'Another
Brick in the Wall' by the Class of 99 all-star team which features Layne
Staley (Alice In Chains), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) and Stephen
Perkins (Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyro's). Other cover songs include two
Alice Cooper tracks- Creed's 'I'm Eighteen' (pretty cool) and Soul Asylum's
'School's Out' (not so great). Elsewhere, tracks like 'Helpless' (D
Generation), 'The Kids Aren't Alright' (The Offspring) and 'It's Over Now'
(Neve) will keep you pogo-hopping even as you're being riddled with
blatantly commercialized angst. Although uneven in places, this is still a
decent enough effort that suitably touches upon the familiar themes of
alienation and despair as experienced by most of today's hip-culture
obsessed teens.
