Grant Lee Phillips has always been an interesting, intelligent eccentric
performer and writer but his previous works with Grant Lee Buffalo had
been a little on the obscure side. Jubilee was a breakthough where he
was still able to project an interesting persona but in a more accessible
way. From the opening track, APB, with its hammering drums and whaling
guitars, the band shows it's ready to rock. While Phillips singing and
lyrics still have an edge, the album is pretty upbeat throughout. Jubilee
is less complicated musically and lyrically than previous GLB work. Truly,
Truly is a simply communicated heartfelt love song. Phillips has found
a way to keep things interesting but also listenable.
Here's what others reviewers have to say:
"...Phillips continues to evoke an utterly unique world composed of
American lore, biblical references, literary flair and stirring emotional
honesty..." 3.5 Stars (out of 5) Rolling Stone 8/20/98, p.110
