Jimmy Thackery honed his chops in one of the most respected groups
in the business, The Nighthawks, a Washington DC based blues band.
This is Thackery's debut for Telarc, he had seven previous releases
on the Blind Pig label before joining the ever growing and distinguished ranks of Telarc.
On "We Got It," Thackery and his band chug right along while paying
tribute to Muscle Shoals legend Eddie Hinton. Thackery's stinging
and biting blues laden electric guitar are complimented by his tighter
than a drum band and his persistent expressive growl that makes every
song more than just a cover. This CD just oozes with soulful R & B
and rocking blues. On the instrumental "Blues Dog Prowl" they switch
gears effectively and go jump into the waters of surf music. In fact,
there is more influence coming from surf than the blues in the song.
If it wasn't for the great saxophone breaks of Jimmy Carpenter to
give it some blue eyed soulfulness, it could have easily turned into
a flat out surf-instrumental rocker. Since I have an affinity for
this kind of music I keyed right in on it instantly. That is the
only track that separates itself from the rest of the album, all the
rest is da blues like it should it be played. "Dangerous Highway"
and "Super Lover" leave no doubt that this man is a tried and tested blues Guitar God.
There is one thing you can count on with a Jimmy Thackery album, steadiness
and a lot of heartfelt hard work. This band is a working man's band,
and they do it right with all sweat and hustle they can muster on every track.
This band rocks the house then burns it to the foundation, and when
you walk away you can still feel the heat and see the embers burning.
They got it, your damn right they do.
