While most of STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 seems to have been; manufactured
strictly for kids, the demonic-looking Darth Maul sure wasn't.
Maybe that's why he's so freaking cool. And since everything with Darth
Maul's face on it is currently experiencing phenomenal,
"blink-and-it's-gone-off-the-shelf"-like sales, this action figure should
be no exception. Especially with it's nifty lightsaber-swinging action
feature. Yes! Now you too can recreate the ultimate three-way showdown
between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan; and while you're at it-experiment
with 'what-if' scenarios such as: "What if Darth Maul had disemboweled
Obi-Wan instead?" Heh.
The Deluxe Darth Maul figure comes with a special plastic post; which
also serves as a smaller version of a lightsaber. By clipping the figure
onto the post, you can activate Darth Maul's menacing lightsaber swinging
moves. You can also use the post to spin and rotate the figure;
achieving nearly the same illusionary effect of the famous Jet-Li style;
flips and summersaults that Maul exhibited in the final duel. The
detailing on this figure is pretty alright, with the sculptors managing
to get Darth Maul's evil facial sneer correct. The horns look a little
blunt, though. As for articulation, it's the standard stuff you'd expect
from a Hasbro Star Wars figure. Read: knees don't buckle. Overall, I was
happy enough with the toy, and I think you'd be too. Hey, it's Darth Maul!
Don't think- just buy.
Oh yeah; for serious collectors who are prone to torturing themselves
with the usual "Should I open it?? / Should I leave it in the box??"
-type questions, the good news is that the action figure comes with a
cut-out hole in the back of its packaging card. This allows you to
insert your finger and operate the lightsaber feature without necessarily
having to rip out the packaging. Thus you can have fun with your toy
nd retain its collectible value at the same time. Hooray!! Those Hasbro
guys think of everything.
