Review by Ken 2½ Stars out of 4
In STAR WARS: EPISODE 1, Nute Gunray is the slimy Trade Federation
Viceroy who oversees the hostile takeover of Naboo together with his pal
Rune Haako. Nute is pretty cool to look at in the movie, but the action
figure somehow only captures half of the required realistic detail. For
one thing, the paint job and detailing on the face just sucks, period. The
store where I picked this up from had a total of 5 Nute figures on
sale, and out of these I could only find one figure where the face-job
wasn't screwed up. All the others had horrid paint smudges on the face
and lips. Also, the cack-awful plastic robes just make the whole toy
seem stiff and dead.
And yes, I purchased the foreign edition figure so it came with the bonus
Battle Droid figure. What would be great is if Hasbro could have made
all the droids come with some paint variations here and there. So at least
your droid army looks like it has some personality. But, no! They had to
go and make it all look the same! I know the movie sort of ironed
out the fact that the droid soldiers were supposed to be uniform-like,
but c'mon! Hasbro should have included some battle-damage scars and dents
at the very least.
To be fair, the Nute Gunray figure is not all that bad. Star Wars
has seen worse before: Remember the 1995 Power Of The Force Princess
Leia that looked more ape than female? Nah, Nute Gunray still gets some
decent marks; especially since villians are quite hard to come by in
the current Star Wars toy range. But due to the lack of detail and
accessories you get, this figure only receives 2.5 stars. However,
if you're a hardcore Star Wars collector, you don't need to be reading
this. You need to be at your toy store checking to see if there's any more
of the damn figures left.
