Sony jumps into the boxing ring with Contender. The game looks good but plays poorly.
Don't let the graphics fool you. The controls are in 2D. Unlike Capcom fighters, the 2D
control in a 3D landscape just doesn't work here. Furthermore, the controls for applied
punches -- that's what the book calls them -- are not intuitive. You can't even move and
punch at the same time. How did a mistake like that go unnoticed? Other weaknesses
include long load times and no number-of-rounds option. On the plus side, a trainer is
helpful in developing your talent, and you can adjust the strength of your CPU
opponent. Maybe we're being harsh, but Contender just doesn't have any lasting
appeal. It's good for a few punches, but not even a few minutes.
