Review by Tom Allen 3 Stars out of 4 (Review of N64 version)
I know what you're thinking. Mario Tennis waters down the sport. The controls are dirt simple,
basically using one button and a few bare bones moves. Think again.
Yes, the controls are simple, but there's a lot you can do with them. The game plays extremely
well, with court textures having a noticeable affect on character movement, but not so much that
you'll only favor one type of court.
Various Mario characters add real flavor to the sport. The Boo ghost is a fantastic character -
because he floats!
Two special modes caught my eye more than the others. First, the piranha mode has the
infamous tube piranha plants chucking 50 balls at you. You have to return all the balls while
Donkey Kong tries to send them back again! What a great mode!
The Bowser stage is great, too, with weird court designs. Heck, the first court sways back and
forth. I believe future courts have holes in them. This stage also lets you use power-ups, like
turtle shells to stun your opponent, or mushrooms to get an adrenaline rush. What a novel idea!
Mario Tennis really delivers fast, fun game play. Grab a group of friends and the game is even
more fun.
