So what's Midway up to lately? Well, with Micro Machines 64 Turbo, the name of the
game is pocket racing! Well, not that small. Anyway, this game offers a great
concept… but only average execution. The biggest complaints are the control and the
overhead camera angle. I know the overhead camera is meant to emphasize the
miniature theme, but a compromise between this angle and a traditional heads-on,
horizon view would have been better. You can't see what's ahead on the track with this
angle. That wouldn't be so bad if the control weren't lousy. Controls are relative to the
vehicles themselves rather than the environment. In other words, if you need to go
right, you may have to press left depending on where the vehicle is facing. This is far
too confusing for most players, especially with an overhead view and an extremely thin
race course.
The graphics are also sub-standard. Yes, they should be simple, but not this simple!
Sparse is the word that best describes the environments, even though in actuality they
are littered with objects. Problem is the objects don't add much to the game play, and
they are not very detailed. Speaking of detail, there is NO detail when it comes to
endings. That's because there are no endings… unless you call a spinning trophy on
an otherwise static screen an ending.
Oh well. The multi-player option is fun, though. Up to eight players can race with four
controllers. For info on the game's many cheats, be sure to visit our website at
