Die-hard sports fans may argue this, but for my money, NFL 2K is the best sports game
ever made. The graphics are better than anything you've ever seen. Just looking at a
player walk is enough to drop your jaw. Notice the detail in the netting - the holes in the
player jerseys. Look at the subtle shading as arms sway back and forth. This is a
guaranteed Academy nominee for software engineering.
NFL 2K's best feature is its play system. Before the Dreamcast, you could never see
who the receiver was unless you popped up a menu. Even that did not effectively show
the receiver's position. Now, thanks to Sega, all plays and receivers are represented on
a play map on the actual field. No tiny diagrams. No guessing on plays. No confusion.
NFL 2K raises the bar so high that any game not offering this kind of user ease will pale
in comparison. Never before has a sports game been so appealing to a general
audience. You could play this game all day long.
Gripe if you want about minor team inaccuracies, but who gives a rat's patooty when the
game play is so good. Just look at this game, folks. It is stunning. It actually upstages
Sonic. Forget Monday Night Football. Get ready for Every Night Football. Just sit back
and watch for a few minutes. Try not to have a heart attack, because in about two
seconds, you're going to see… THE SIDELINE SHOT!
