This is the game that killed the Beanie Babies. Now America's youth is obsessed with
Pikachu, the cute yellow Pokemon with special lightning powers. The only difference
between Pokemon and old-school RPG's is that characters can morph into new
characters after enough experience points. Like the guardian forces in Final Fantasy 8,
once you capture a Pokemon, you train it by battling other Pokemon for experience
points. You yourself can't die; only your Pokemon can die. Catching Pokemon is a lot
of fun, even if the game is simplistic. Parents should not be concerned about Pokemon
mania. This game actually teaches valuable management skills to children and creates
an in-depth social experience as players can actually trade Pokemon electronically. I
am quite impressed that 5 year-olds are able to master a game like this. A perfect mix
of action and Academy Award-winning character development, Pokemon is a great
game for the 12 and under crowd, and even older folks, too.
Players who own the Blue cartridge can only trade Pokemon with owners of the Red
cartridge, and vice versa. Trading is possible only with the Game Link cable.
