I admit it: I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan. I have watched all his other
movies, but I just didn't find them all that funny.
Then Little Nicky came along and I finally saw what all the fuss was
about. Little Nicky, played convincingly by Adam Sandler, is one of three
sons of Satan himself. When dear old dad decides to keep his throne
instead of giving it up to one of the three, brothers Adrian (Rhys Ifans)
and Cassius (I cannot remember his name to save me!) get pissed and head
up to Earth to make their own hell. The problem: their departure freezes
the gates of Hell and Satan (Harvey Keitel) begins to fall to pieces,
literally. Sweet and goofy Nicky is sent up to catch them. The movie
follows his attempts to save dear old dad as well as his blundering
romantic interest in extremely shy student Valerie (Patricia Arquette).
Thus, a Sandler movie makes me laugh. The comedy was low key enough to
be funny without intimidating: that is, the pointless jokes about breasts
were kept to a minimum. There was less slapstick and more real humor.
And the whole devil being a loving father was a good twist. Harvey Keitel
and Rhys Ifans were extremely convincing and were good springboards for
Sandler's performance.
So despite an overall sense of silliness throughout, Little Nicky is worthy
of watching over and over again. Though hardcore Sandler fans may find
it lacking, that's only because they're still stuck on college jokes.
Those who hate Sandler may finally see something they like. Any way you
look, Little Nicky is worthy of renting. I wouldn't watch a movie ten
times for nothing.
