If you like predictable horror movies with lots of gore you'll enjoy JEEPERS
CREEPERS. Gina Philips and Justin Long play two bickering siblings, Trish
and Darryl, traveling home from college on a country highway. The two
are run off the road by a giant old truck. Later they encounter the
vehicle again and what looks like a man tossing a dead body, wrapped in
a blood stained sheet, down a sewer hole outside an old church.
Darryl convinces Trish to go and see if the person is alive. Reluctantly,
Trish agrees and the two look down the hole. Darryl thinks he hears voices
and wants to get a better look. Trish holds Darryl's feet while he
searches with a flashlight. At this point we can predict that Darryl will
fall down the hole, which is exactly what happens. Rats jump up from
the hole and Trish lets go of his feet. He plunges down the hole. The
suspense builds as we wonder what horrific site Darryl will see.
He kicks the body wrapped in a sheet and a hand lunges at him. He removes
the sheet and glances at what ghastly deed was done to the body. The
front is sliced apart and sewed together. Darryl gazes up and sees tons
of bodies in the same condition on the ceiling of the basement of the
church.
He later tells police it looks like a "psychotic version of the Sistine
Chapel."
Darryl finds his way out and comes back in a state of shock. Next, the two
go to a dilapidated old diner asking for help. While at the restaurant
they receive a phone call from a woman (Patricia Belcher) that knows their
names and what has happened. She predicts that they will be in great
danger when they hear the song "Jeepers Creepers."
They encounter a mysterious old woman with many cats (Eileen Brennan). As
the weak plot unravels Trish and Darryl fight off the beast with little
suspense. JEEPERS CREEPERS ends abruptly leaving room for a sequel, but
let's hope not.
Although quite scarey in the beginning JEEPERS CREEPERS is gripping until
we know the answers to the questions is it a body that they found and
who is responsible for the heinous acts? The story is limited and the
characters are unbelievable and underdeveloped. We know very little about
their personalities and have no attachment to them. It's a horror movie
with very few jumpy scenes that at times is comedic in its absurdity.
Being a fan of horror movies, I consider this to be nothing more than
mediocre.
