You have to give one thing to FINAL DESTINATION 2, it does have an impressively
frightening opening, most of which is shown in its trailers. A big, heavy,
logging truck is going down a rain-slick, heavily-trafficked highway. Of
course, its logs come loose, setting off a horrible chain reaction crash that
takes dozens of people's lives. The sound of the accident is intense, and the
stunt work is believable, which is more than you can say about the rest of the
picture.
Just as FINAL DESTINATION was about people who cheat death by leaving just
before disaster strikes, in FINAL DESTINATION 2 not everyone who was supposed to
perish in the pile-up does. Kimberly Corman (A.J. Cook), a young driver who has
a daydream that predicts the events that are about to unfold, saves the lives of
many would-be goners. The rules for the FINAL DESTINATION series, however,
require Mr. Death to come back later and collect the bodies on his list, and his
manner of working isn't pretty. One guy, for example, is almost killed in a
fire but ends up having his brain impaled by a heavy metal ladder.
The thin story isn't able to sustain anything approaching a full movie length.
As a half-hour "Twilight Zone" episode, it might have been able to hold your
attention, but at almost one-and-three-quarter hours, it just tests your
patience. Let's hope that this is the final FINAL DESTINATION.
FINAL DESTINATION 2 runs 1:40. It is rated R for "strong violent/gruesome
accidents, language, drug content and some nudity" and would be acceptable for
older teenagers.
