GIGLI rhymes with really, as in really, really bad. Critic Joe Morgenstern
called GIGLI, "the worst allegedly major movie -- of our admittedly young
century." Well, I'm here to tell you that it's not quite that bad, even if
it's close. FREDDIE GOT FINGERED already has the worst movie of the century
slot all locked up.
The movie pairs real-life lovers, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, as Larry
Gigli and Ricki. Larry, a self-described "Sultan of slick," is a really bad
muscleman for the mob. Ricki, whose name actually isn't Ricki, is a lesbian
who becomes Larry's unwanted partner in crime. They are babysitting a
mentally handicapped kid that Larry has kidnapped. The movie's script
stoops to abuse of the handicapped as one way to try to get some laughs.
J. Lo has a history of making good film choices, but Affleck has made
several stupid moves with his worst one before GIGLI being a stint as a
superhero in DAREDEVIL. Even the ever-reliable Christopher Walken gives a
truly miserable performance in GIGLI.
From the very start the movie flatlines like a heart monitor on a dead man.
And it never improves.
GIGLI runs a very long 2:04. It is rated R for "sexual content, pervasive
language and brief strong violence" and would be acceptable for teenagers.
