Although the plot is nothing you haven't seen before this
movie turns out to be both funny and sweet enough to leave
you feeling good about having watched. Partly this is due to the Farrelly
Bros. trademark irreverent
humor-although personally I've never been a huge fan of the
grosser elements of it. Partly the script handles the "wrong side
of the tracks" characters very realistically and Dunphy's
coming of age is believable not just a cinematic convention.
Part of the credit also has to go to the overall excellent
cast-especially Alec Baldwin as Dunphy's truly screwed up
old man. John Abrahams as Drugs Delaney is a kick and Shawn Hatosy
(a familiar face from several recent films like The Faculty and
In & Out) as the protagonist Tim Dunphy is quite good. George Wendt
has a nice role as well. The only ringer is the Mr. Funderberk
character which is essentially just your basic evil adult
out to get Our Hero.
All the standard teen-70s-coming of age shtick is
here: constant pot smoking, dumb sex pranks, etc. But if not
stunningly original it's still a sweet and funny film. However
I would rather have seen more of the father-son subplot than
the romantic one.
The 70's soundtrack is nice, too.
For a similar feel try Heaven Help Us or Dazed and Confused.
