Suposedly the Scream movies were intended as a trilogy from the very start.
If so, this one makes you wonder why. It lacks all of the
qualities that made the first one a hit.
From the opening scenes (the best in the movie, IMHO) and
throughout the filmmakers promise you that since this
is the 3rd in a trilogy all the rules are out the window,
anything can happen. But that's the problem... other than
the opening nothing much unexpected does happen. The change
in writer seems to have sucked much of the life from the
concept.
Even if viewed as your basic horror film without the
expectation of originality the film is still below par.
It's watchable of course, Craven is directing and the cast
is still fun to watch. There are a few scenes that didn't
do much for me but which made the woman sitting beside me
in the theatre jump in her seat. There is one excellent
scene with a thrown knife that was very nearly worth the price
of admission for me. A couple of cameos were amusing, too.
But the final revelation of the killer feels weak, not only was
it terribly contrived but instead of using a good script to
keep you from guessing who the killer was they seemed to
have opted for simply keeping the character off-screen as
much as possible until the end.
If you think Scream 2 compared unfavourably to the first movie
then this of the same progression here. Scream 3 is to Scream 2
in terms of wit, scares and originality what Scream 2 was the the
original. Truly they should leave it at this.
