Prologue: in pre-historic times, the Monolith appears and the apes learn
to use tools; the mysterious black structure will reappear several
centuries later, to mark again an important moment in human evolution,
as a team of astronauts in the year 2001 is sent to Jupiter to
investigate about a radio transmission. Meet Dave Bowman, a
human against the unknown, and HAL, the talking computer that will have
a malfunction during the mission. Kubrick's lyrical and visionary
masterpiece, 2001 is also filled with beautiful music that is
perfectly integrated in the movie (the space station dances to
Johann Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz, while Giorgy Ligety's spectral
atmospheres are perfect for the appearances of the Monolith; while Richard
Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra -which is the background to both the
opening sequence and end title- is universally known as
"the" theme to 2001).
